On April 11, U.S. Ambassador Paul A. Trivelli, together with the Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Nicaragua, Alex Dickie, launched USAID’s FamiSalud Project in Leon and Chinandega.

USAID’s $8 million FamiSalud project with the NicaSalud Federation, a network of nongovernmental organizations, will help improve health care for more than 410,000 people in rural communities in the 70 poorest municipalities in the country.

Under the FamiSalud project, USAID will provide $1.07 million for health activities in the departments of Leon and Chinandega that will be carried out by the Occidente Network, formed by Save the Children, PROFAMILIA, Plan International and the Asociacion para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos (ADP).

The project will extend and improve primary health services for approximately 79,000 people in 415 communities in the departments of Leon and Chinandega.  Activities include vaccination campaigns, child growth monitoring in the communities, hygiene programs, family planning, HIV/AIDS testing, maternity care and deliveries by trained medical personnel.  Over 450 midwives and 1,200 health volunteers will receive training.
