USAID Supports Citizen Participation in Municipal Elections

With the participation of U.S. Ambassador Paul A. Trivelli, USAID Acting Mission Director Carol Horning signed 15 grants with civil society organizations and the media that will be used to promote citizen participation in the upcoming municipal elections in November 2008. 

The projects, which range from $13,000 to $25,000, will be implemented in 16 municipalities nationwide, with a total estimated cost of $320,000 provided by the U.S. Government through USAID.  The projects will be implemented in: Bluefields, Chinandega, Granada, Esteli, Jinotega, Jinotepe, Juigalpa, Leon, Managua, Masaya, Matagalpa, Nagarote, Ocotal, Puerto Cabezas, Rivas and Sebaco.

The projects include: radio and TV spots; get out the vote public announcements; support to youth and women organizations to raise issues and concerns to candidates in different municipalities; promotion of first-time voter participation; workshops for journalists on citizen participation and the electoral process; voter training; video documentaries produced by journalism students on electoral processes; and cultural activities to promote the vote, among others.

The following organizations received grants:

  • Centro Ecuménico Antonio de Valdivieso (CEAV) in association with Red de Jóvenes Nicaragüita (RJN)
  • Centro de Investigaciones de la Comunicación (CINCO)
  • Centro para Programas de la Comunicación (CPC/Nicaragua) in association with Movimiento por Nicaragua
  • Comisión Permanente de Derechos Humanos (CPDH)
  • Comisiones de Justicia y Paz, Diócesis de Estelí (CJPE) in association with Radio 15 de Septiembre
  • Fundación DESAFIOS in association with  Dúo Guardabarranco
  • Fundación Jinotegana para el Desarrollo Sostenible (FUNJIDES)
  • Fundación Nakawé
  • Fundación Nicaragua Nuestra (FNN)
