The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided assistance for the establishment of a Judicial Observatory in Leon that will investigate human rights violations and monitor the application of judicial reforms in Chinandega and Leon. Through reports, publications, and seminars, the observatory will point out irregularities in the application of justice and will expose human rights violations towards groups that have traditionally been denied access to justice, such as children, women, and indigenous groups.
Located in the Institute of Human Rights in the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua in León, the observatory is the first of two that will be established with USAID financing. The other observatory will be located in the Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University (BICU) in Bluefields, RAAS.
Support for the opening of these centers is part of the activities carried out under USAID’s $10 million Rule of Law Program that is committed to increasing the number of organizations in civil society dedicated to supervising and monitoring the implementation of judicial and human rights reforms throughout the country.
Support for the Judicial Observatory in León totals about $10,000. With this financing, USAID will train 13 professionals as human rights violation investigators in León and Chinandega, and provide the equipment necessary for the center’s operations.
