MEDIATION AND ARBITRATION CENTER INAUGURATED
The U.S. government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), made a $50,000 donation to the Nicaraguan Chamber of Commerce (CACONIC) to establish a Center for Mediation and Arbitration and for training mediators that will provide services to national and international investors. The Center will offer a just, impartial, and quick resolution to conflicts outside the formal justice system and will resolve commercial disputes that will help increase investor confidence.
This donation is part of USAID’s $10 million Rule of Law Program that is committed to increasing the number of organizations in civil society dedicated to supervising and monitoring the implementation of judicial and human rights reforms throughout the country.
AN INSTRUMENT FOR NEW LAWS
USAID provided technical assistance for public consultations, drafting, and promulgation of the Law for Mediation and Arbitration (Law 540/05) in conjunction with CACONIC. At the same time, USAID contributes to the dissemination and implementation of other laws that are necessary to modernize the judicial system.
MORE CENTERS
Additionally, with USAID support, 10 mediation centers will be inaugurated in different parts of the country, including in three universities in Managua, and in two Managua police stations with high-density populations, at the National University in Leon, in Jinotega, Carazo, in the Mining Triangle in Bonanza, and at the Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University in Bluefields. The selection and training of mediators and arbiters necessary to manage and administer cases in all these centers will likewise be supported.
