The Ambassador of the United States in Nicaragua, Paul A. Trivelli, participated in a graduation ceremony for 100 youths from Managua who took part in an 11-month course carried out by the Don Bosco Youth Center. The course was financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Salesian Congregation, at a cost of $150,000.
The program, named “Enter 21”, offered training in network administration, computer repair and maintenance, computerized accounting, Web Page design, and server administration.
The course is followed by an apprenticeship in which each participant benefits from a tutor who guides and evaluates job performance. The program also provides job placement or small loans for those students who want to start their own business.
In addition to the 100 students in Managua, “Enter 21” has trained 54 youths in Estelí and 39 in Somoto, for a total of 193 in technological, social, and life-planning skills.
This program is part of a USAID alliance with the International Youth Foundation and the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter American Development Bank. “Enter 21” is a $24 million program that is co-financing 40 projects in over 20 Latin American countries to train youths in computer and communication technologies, and to find them jobs.
